Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre

Rotarians from several clubs of Lahore visited Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. The visit was organised by DGN Shahzad Ahmed with the purpose of exploring ways that Rotary can help Shaukat Khanum Hospital. The visitors were accorded a warm welcome and a comprehensive tour of the hospital.

The tour was followed a presentation cum Q&A session by Dr. Faisal Sultan, CEO of the Shaukat Khanum. He also discussed some of the future plans and highlighted some projects where Rotarians can possibly help raise the funds.

Speaking at the occassion, DGN Shehzad Ahmad said that he hopes to present SKMCH&RC as the main focus and most important matching grant project when he becomes the District Governor in 2010-2011. But he does not intend to hold this good work till then and therefore wants to initiate the work and efforts from now. Also, he wants to include other clubs of the district in these efforts who are often asking a common question: What project should we do?

Included in the visitors were many young people who keenly expressed their desire to volunteer as well as help the hospital with its fund raising.

100th Rotary International Convention: 2009 Brum

RI Convention 2009 Birmingham, England

RI Convention 2009 Birmingham, England

Rotary International will be holding its 100th RI convention in June 2009 at Birmingham, or “Brum” as its lovingly referred to by its residents. The event will run from June 21st to 24th, 2008. RI Conventions are a fantastic melting pot of cultures and peoples from around the world. Birmingham also holds a special importance in the history of Rotary: Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary visited Brum back then.

Brum also played host to an RI Convention back in 1984. But, the place has changed tremendously. A fantastic video CD was received this week that highlights the attractions and expected highlights of the event and personal invitation from the RI President, D.K. Lee, to attend the convention.

To find out more about the event, and to make the bookings please visit this link to the Rotary website as well as this link to the 2009 Convention website.

A day out at the World Performing Arts Festival

World Performing Arts Festival

World Performing Arts Festival

World Performing Arts Festival has been a keenly awaited event for my family, particularly the kids. This is the only activity where we have even taken exception and attended the shows during the exams at our kids’ school. Today, it suddenly hit me that there are so many children who don’t even have a clue what fun it is. That’s when the Rotarian in me woke up!

Rotary Club of Lahore Liberty is organising a day out at the World Performing Arts Festival for the children of a local orphange. The festival has been a huge success over the years and this year it is the 25th festival. It brings performers from a wide vareity of countries and goes on to show that despite the negative media projection due to terrorist threats, Pakistan is still a vibrant, fun loving place.

This Rotary project will provide a rare opportunity for the under priviledged children to enjoy and gather beautiful memories to cherish for a long time, while the Rotarians will be able to bring smiles on these children’s faces.

The project is being orgnised by Rtn. Saheefa Jaleel, Rtn. Hina Elahi and Rtn. Ammar Arif Ali under the guidance of club’s President Rtn. Raza Jaffri.

The speaker stressed on the need to have proper plans as well as checks and balances in place to obtain desired results from any microfinance project. The torch of leadership of the club has been handed over by the Immediate Past President Rtn. Seema Arif to the new President of the club Rtn. Raza Jaffri. He will remain the club’s president from July 2008 to June 2009.

Rtn. Raza Jaffri served as the Secretary of the Club during the tenure of IPP Seema Arif July 2007 – June 2008.

National Children’s Mountain Conservation Meet

The Rotary Club of Lahore Liberty is sponsoring 5 children’s participation in the 7th National Children’s Mountain Conservation Meet. NCMCM, as its commonly abbreviated, is organised by Adventure Foundation Pakistan, a long established organisation promoting the principles of outward bound.

The event is scheduled from July 1st to 10th, 2008 and will be held in the beautiful Kaghan valley. As explained on the Pakistan Times website the event creates “awareness among young people about the mountain ecosystems and involve them in meaningful activities using mountains’ environment as an open classroom. Under this programme each year 120 children are selected from all parts of Pakistan to attend a 10 days camp in mountain environment.”

Sadly, the dedicated website of this project is currently down, but that of Adventure Foundation Pakistan can be viewed, although it provides minimal information about NCMCM.

Our club sponsored the participation of 5 children, who would otherwise not have been able to afford it on their own, and would not be in a position to expereince the entire learning and comraderie that is part and parcel of such events.
